Great Italian food is undoubtedly one of life’s great pleasures and, as a priority, I always seek out the ‘Little Italy’ precincts of any city I travel to. The best Italian cuisine is both a comfort food and a connection to some of my earliest culinary memories.

Perhaps you are looking for authentic, lovingly prepared Italian favourites like pasta carbonara and wood-fired pizza. Maybe you are hungry for an imaginative spin on a timeless classic. Either way, you are guaranteed to find a restaurant to suit your tastes somewhere in this guide.

And if you prefer to wander through an Italian district in Melbourne and pick out a restaurant from its street appeal, then you must visit the Lygon Street precinct in the heart of Carlton. It was in this pocket of ‘Little Italy’ that Melbourne’s famous cafe culture was born.

Read on to find out more about the best 15 Italian restaurants in the city of Melbourne.

Ombra Pizza & Wine - Best Italian restaurants in Melbourne

Trattoria Emilia

Location: 360 Little Collins St, Melbourne, VIC 3000 Ph: (03) 9670 7214

We open our look at the best Italian restaurants in Melbourne with a perfect lunch spot for CBD diners. Trattoria Emilia is a charming, cosy and laid-back restaurant with a great range of fresh handmade pasta dishes and daily specials.

There’s a warm rustic ambiance to the restaurant with white walls, wooden tables and interesting artwork on the walls. The food is based on fresh seasonal produce and the menu changes regularly.

The owners hail from Modena in northern Italy, and the trattoria takes inspiration from the rich culinary tradition of the Italian region of Emilia-Romagna (hence the name). Classic recipes are typically handed down through generations, and then given a modern twist by Emilia’s talented chefs.

Try the Tagliatelli with Ragu Bolognese if you crave a traditional classic, or perhaps the Taglioni with Truffle, when in season. This is authentic Italian food served in generous portions and with reasonable prices.

The waiting staff are efficient and friendly, and the location conveniently central. Trattoria Emilia is a wise choice for lunch or dinner.

Not Italian, but really very good, check out our review of Farmer’s Daughters on Exhibition Street

Di Stasio Citta

Location: 45 Spring St, Melbourne, VIC 3004 Ph: (03) 9070 1177

This is undoubtedly one of the finest Italian restaurants in the city. It is the sister restaurant of Café Di Stasio, which is a renowned and popular venue in its own right.

This establishment is lauded for the quality of its food, the freshness of its produce and the extensive wine list. There’s also a beguiling, chilled ambience to the venue which is bang on trend with its industrial chic credentials.

The pasta is entirely house-made, the cooking methods traditional and the specials both authentic and inventive.

Marameo (formerly Sarti)

Location: 6 Russell Pl, Melbourne, VIC 3000 Ph: (03) 9639 7822

Marameo replaced the beloved Italian restaurant, Sarti, when it was ‘retired’ in late 2019.

Known for serving imaginative modern Italian food in relaxed environs in Russell Place, Sarti was a long-time favourite of the CBD crowd.

With its welcoming bar and rooftop terrace, Sarti offered a CBD sanctuary to embrace the age-old Italian values of family, friends, food and celebrating life in style.

Sarti was a One Hat Restaurant and AGFG award winner, with a contemporary focus on food and style. Executive Chef, Paolo Masciopinto’s career is known for creativity, passion and commitment to quality.

With Marameo, the bar and wonderful rooftop terrace have been re-imagined, and there’s been more than a cursory make-over. If anything, the venue is now even more laid-back, chilled and casual. Cheeky and irreverent comes to mind.

Marameo is another hospitality venue from the Italian-bred and Melbourne-raised, Carolina Group. Il Bacaro (on Little Collins St), Tetto Di Carolina and Bar Carolina (both in South Yarra) have also sprung from restaurateur Joe Mammone’s fertile imagination.

The squid-ink spaghetti with blue swimmer crab was popular at Sarti, and it remains a staple on the menu at Marameo.

All the pasta is made in-house, and if you find yourself hungry in the city, the $20 Express Lunch offers great value (from 12pm daily).

Marameo is an eatery where you can enjoy the time-honoured traditions of Italian cuisine without the clichés.

Cafe Andiamo

Location: 36-38 Degraves St, Melbourne, VIC 3000 Ph: (03) 9650 8060

We had to choose a bistro or restaurant in Degraves Street for this article. Why? Because Degraves is one of our favourite eating streets in the whole of Australia.

In our opinion, every visitor to Melbourne should take the time to explore Degraves Street in the heart of the CBD.

Are your Pasta Bowls chipped or cracked? Take a look at these beautiful designs and see if any of them would look good in your kitchen.

It’s a famous, funky street-art adorned laneway with hole-in-the-wall cafes, bustling pedestrians, trendy boutiques, and quirky restaurants. It’s an iconic Melbourne hotspot for dining, drinking and soaking up the atmosphere.

But where to dine? Well, why not grab a table at Cafe Andiamo, order a Negroni and the pollo funghi? Better still, follow up with an affogato. Then sit back, people-watch, and revel in the sheer hubbub of this enchanting laneway.

Cicciolina

Location: 130 Acland St, St Kilda, VIC 3182 Ph: (03) 9525 3333

This Italian restaurant has been open since 1993 and the food reflects over twenty years of excellence. It has become a much-loved favourite amongst Melburnians due to its iconic status, phenomenal dishes and the winning conviviality of its atmosphere. And as if all this isn’t enough, Cicciolina is also a design fiends dream, with Eames-influenced furniture and an idiosyncratic art collection gracing its walls.

If you find yourself waiting for a table at this popular Italian eatery, then you can head straight to the bar and sample a pleasing variety of Italian wine.

Even better, grab a seta at the bar and enjoy a cocktail or 2. After all, this is one of our favourite places for a date night.

Gilson South Yarra

Location: 171 Domain Rd, South Yarra, VIC 3141 Ph: (03) 9866 3120

It’s hard to find a balance between a classy, yet relaxed, dining experience, but Gilson South Yarra has found the magic formula.

On a sunny evening, you can sip a sundowner on the terrace in front of the eatery and imagine yourself in Rome. In contrast, when the weather cools, the inside of the venue is welcoming and cosy.

And this convivial atmosphere extends to eating arrangements too. At Gilson Restaurant, the menu focuses on seasonal fare, served on sharing portions. Dip into plates of White Anchovies or Whipped Ricotta with Wood-Fired Bread, whilst chatting with friends. Then, try the Mussels, N’duja, Fennel, White Wine Chilli & Garlic and a slice or 2 of Vodka Sauce & Fior Di Latte Pizza. Or maybe the Linguine Vongole will help the conversation flow better?

Whatever the occasion, Gilson South Yarra will both feed and nurture you in equal measure.

Grossi Florentino

Location: 80 Bourke St, Melbourne, VIC 3000 Ph: (03) 9662 1811

You simply can’t talk about the best Italian restaurants in Melbourne and ignore Grossi Florentino.

If you are seeking a fine-dining, Italian experience then this is the restaurant for you. Here, the service is exemplary and the food served is exquisite across every course. If you consider yourself to be a bit of a lasagne expert, you must try their version with the Wild Boar Ragu. It’s to die for, but take a friend as it comes in a double serve. Believe me. Your friend will be delighted!

On a warm evening, a table outside on the street makes you feel like you’re eating in Milan.

This is the perfect restaurant for quality Italian meat. It boasts a wide range of cuts, from lamb to duck.

Dishes like the Beef Sirloin Carpaccio with Bay Leaf Ricotta and beetroot are divine and my partner still talks about the balance of the Spaghetti with King George Whiting, Koji and Sardine. Yum!

Agostino

Location: 297 Lygon St, Carlton, VIC 3053 Ph: (03) 9347 1619

If you know anything about the Italian food scene in Melbourne, you’ll be aware that for many people Lygon Street restaurants are the first place to look for popular regional fare.

With this in mind, welcome to our take on Agostino – bang in the centre of Melbourne’s ‘Little Italy’. Not only that, but it’s part of the fabulous King & Godfree Italian deli and grocer.

This wine bar come restaurant serves delicious seasonal sharing plates of antipasti, wonderful bowls of pasta and superb mains.

Pop in for a Negroni and appetiser of salty Prosciutto with Persimmon & Gnocco Fritto and stay for the al dente Bigoli with its lush Duck Ragu.

Prosciutto Agostino - Best Italian restaurants in Melbourne

Agostino is part of the stylish King & Godfree set up in the heart of Melbourne’s Little Italy – Lygon Street. This enterprise now includes its namesake gourmet delicatessen and grocer, the Pidapipo gelateria, the King and Godfree Espresso Bar and the rooftop bar, Johnny’s Green Room.

Editor’s Note: At the time of writing this, Agostino is closed. However, we’ve been assured that this is only a temporary measure whilst renovations take place.

Il Solito Posto

Location: Basement/113 Collins St, Melbourne, VIC 3000 Ph: (03) 9654 4465

There’s something wonderfully comforting about the buzz of a popular basement eatery. And thankfully, Il Solito Posto is one such place. Even better, the service is exemplary and the food simply divine.

The Farfalle al Salmone ($27/33) is a lovely plate of Pasta, where Smoked Salmon, Tomato & Broccoli are harmoniously bound by a sauce of Cream & Dill. However, we have a major weak spot for the kitchen’s awesome Polpette di Manzo ($35). Here, succulent Pork & Beef Meatballs come Stuffed with Smoked Mozzarella, doused in a rich Napoli Sauce and set on the bed of Soft Polenta. It’s heavenly.

Incidentally, Il Solito Posto also offers a Breakfast Menu. Our go to is the Italian Scrambled Eggs ($19), which features Pancetta, Roma Tomato, Basil, Parmesan & Toasted Sourdough.

Come summertime, we love to grab a bagel and head outside. Here are some of our favourite bagels in Melbourne.

Grazia Restaurant

Location: 159 Burke Rd, Glen Iris, VIC 3146 Ph: (03) 9470 3540

Sitting on the increasingly foodie-centric cusp of Glen Iris and Malvern East, Grazia Restaurant is brining a splash of Italian sunshine to the suburbs.

Open with the scrumptious Arancini ($14 per 2), heady with Roasted Pumpkin, Smoked Scamorza & Rosemary, or a plump Sydney Rock Oyster ($5.5), garnished with Negroni Granita. The pick of the Pastas is arguably the Pappardelle Con Aragosta E Gamberoni ($44).Here, delicate Pasta marries perfectly with King Prawns, Lobster, Cherry Tomatoes and a banging Lobster Bisque.

Grazia Restaurant - Mort & Ort Pizzas - the best Italian restaurants in Melbourne

And whilst is may not sound tremendous, we are absolute suckers for the Mortadella E Pistachio Pizza ($32). Honestly, if you don’t believe us, give it a go.

If you’re not feeling hungry (Shame on you!), Grazia Restaurant is also a great spot to nip in for a post work glass of vino and a wee plate of Calamari Fritti.

Seriously, things are looking up around Glen Iris!

Capitano Carlton

Location: 421 Rathdowne St, Carlton, VIC 3053 Ph: (03) 9134 8555

Now this entry on our rundown of the best Italian restaurants in Melbourne is a little different from the rest of the pack. That’s because this restaurant specialises in American-Italian cuisine. Which means big serves as well as tasty food.

The pizza here is phenomenal and there are so many choices to choose from that the menu has been divided into ‘Pizza’ and ‘Not Pizza’ options.

If you are looking for hearty food, then this is the spot for you.

Scopri Italian Food and Wine

Location: 191 Nicholson St, Carlton, VIC 3053 Ph: (03) 9347 8252

This restaurant is aptly named after the Italian word meaning ‘discover’. We reckon there’s a good chance you will discover your new favourite Italian dish at this dining spot.

Like other places on this list of the best Italian restaurants in Melbourne, the menu here changes with the season. The great thing about this is you can come back time and again to sample new culinary delights.

At Scopri, they use only the freshest ingredients and their own-farmed produce. The result is dishes that are organic and authentic from paddock to plate. And they are all delish.

We love pasta, but we are also suckers for a deep bowl of noodles. These are our top Ramen Spots in Melbourne.

Park Street Pasta & Wine

Location: 268 Park St, South Melbourne, VIC 3205 Ph: (03) 9042 8871

This restaurant prepares its pasta in a distinctively unique way, using machinery to extrude the delightfully doughy macaroni, pasta and penne options.

The result is wholesome, authentic pasta, freshly prepared. And you can taste that attention to detail in every single mouthful at Park Street Pasta and Wine.

And yes. Their wine selection is pretty good too.

Sometimes, all you want is a big, juicy burger. See our guide to the Best Burger Restaurants in Melbourne.

Grill Americano

Location: 112 Flinders Ln, Melbourne, VIC 3000 Ph: (03) 8616 8010

Apparently, Australia is in the middle of a cost of living crisis, but that doesn’t seem to have effected the hospitality juggernaut that is the Lucas Restaurants. With Japanese favourites Tombo Den and Yakimono thriving, perpetual queues outside Chin Chin and no shortage of patrons for Society Restaurant, Lillian Brasserie or Maison Bâtard, it’s no surprise that Chris Lucas’ take on high end Italian dining is also quick to book out.

And make no mistake. This is very much high end. From the signature blue of the dining room’s upholstery to the metres of marble adorning and dramatic floral arrangements, everything speaks of a big budget spend.

So what should you order? Well, the Carpaccio Di Manzo (Beef), Tuna Mayonnaise ($36.50) is a mouth-watering take on the classic Vitello Tonnato. Our pick of the Pasta is the light, fragrant and oh-so-pretty Lobster Tortellini, Tomato Consomme & Crayfish Oil ($52.50). Meanwhile, From The Grill, the Wagyu Hanger Steak with Funghi, Red Wine & Bone Marrow Sauce (400g $110.50) is a rich, full-bloodied indulgence. Especially when paired with something special from Grill Americano’s extensive wine cellar.

Despite all this, the dish that most people associate with this fine diner is its Tiramisu. Served table-side, from a large, shallow bowl, its Instagram famous for good reason.

Yes. Eating at Grill Americano isn’t a cheap night out. But for a memorable meal, it’s hard to beat. And that’s why it makes our list of the best Italian restaurants in Melbourne.

Rosetta Ristorante

Location: Crown Melbourne, Crown Riverwalk, Crown Melbourne, 8 Whiteman St, Southbank, VIC 3006 Ph: (03) 9081 0534

The bonus selection on this list is the Rosetta Ristorante. This restaurant serves food crafted by the celebrity chef Neil Perry and is renowned for being one of the most popular Italian restaurants in the whole of Melbourne.

The wood-fired lamb is to die for and they also boast over 16 variations of house-made pasta.

Rosetta Southbank - Exterior

The dining experience is also complimented by the outdoor dining area where you are able to look across the Yarra River and as such, this is undoubtedly one of the best spots for a first date in the whole of Melbourne.

Whilst we’re ambling beside the Yarra, here are our Best Restaurants in South Bank Melbourne.

Editor’s Note: We are shocked and saddened to hear that Rosetta Ristorante will close on Sunday 19 May 2024.

Further to this, we can confirm that the lovely Rosetta is gone. However, from its ashes has risen a new, rather attractive phoenix. Welcome the California cool of Marmont Crown. We hope to dine there soon and will give you our verdict as soon as we have.

In the meantime, why not try this much-loved spot instead…?

Mister Bianco

Location: Located in Kew Junction, 26-28 Cotham Rd, Kew, VIC 3101 Ph: (03) 9853 6929

If you live anywhere near Kew, then the chances are that you know all about the polished Southern Italian and Sicilian food served at Mister Bianco. This is an establishment which has stood the test of time by turning out consistently wonderful, authentic dishes.

For example, there are Stuffed Olives, and then there are the Stuffed Olives ($16) at Mister Bianco. Filled with punchy ‘Nduja, crumbed and fried they are utterly addictive. Similarly, in a town where you can barely move for a Burrata dish, here it comes adorning a Cherry Tomato Tarte Tartin + Basil Pesto ($27).Arguably, the pick of the Secondi is the Twice Cooked Half Duck ($54). Burnished and fall-apart perfect, it’s accompanied by Mash Potato, Dried Figs + Spice Sauce. It’s a stunner!

In addition to the superb Italian food, Mister Bianco is renowned for it’s attentive service and cosseting ambience. And all that is why we feel it’s one of the Best Italian restaurants in Melbourne.

Maybe you need a decent Digital Meat Thermometer for your BBQs, or perhaps you need a Vegetable Slicer that won’t remove your fingers. Either way, we’ve got just what you need amongst our selection of Kitchen Gadgets. Click here for full details.

Incidentally, the team at Mister Bianco has recently opened a very cool little cocktail bar right next to the restaurant – Bianchetto.

This intimate wee locale is perfect for a date night, or to fill out for a celebratory event. The menu runs to a number of delicious cocktails plus a noteworthy array of tapas-style plates. We absolutely love the Scaccia – a Flatbread stuffed with Mortadella.

Check out our list of must-try Melbourne Bars, right here.

Studio Amaro

Location: 168 Chapel St, Windsor, VIC 3181 Ph: (03) 7046 0891

Personally, when I heard that the Commune Group was bringing us an Italian restaurant, I got excited. After all, this is the crew behind Firebird in neighbouring Prahan, New Quarter in Richmond and Tokyo Tina up the road – amongst other fine eating spots.

Well thankfully, Studio Amaro doesn’t disappoint.

Retro-chic and relaxed comfort are the order of the day. Plus the food is fabulous. A case in point is the simple sounding Tuna Carpaccio ($25). Here, succulent, fresh Tuna appears bathed in an addictive Smoked Tomato Oil, nuggets of Dried Olive Crumb and crunchy Capers. Meanwhile, over on the Pasta side of the menu, the Casarecce, Zucchini, Pistacchio, Squacquerone & Anchovy ($34) gets a big things up.

You want more? Did we say that there’s also a basement bar? Cocktails, Beers, Wine and a plentiful array of Amaro (of course!) can be enjoyed either alone, or with dishes from the main menu. What’s more, there is a DJ spinning tunes to add to the cool late night vibe.

Tippy-Tay

Location: Garden State Hotel. 101 Flinders Ln, Melbourne, VIC 3000 Ph: (03) 8396 5777

If this is Melbourne’s answer to the Mediterranean’s la dolce vita, count us in!

But first, I have to be honest. I really had to brace myself to set foot inside Tippy-Tay. Why? Well, I visited the Garden State Hotel when it first opened, and whilst I loved the fun energy of the place, it was so loud with ‘bright young things’ that I could barely hear myself think.

Well, all fears vanished pretty swiftly when we got to our table at Tippy-Tay.

Tippy-Tay Exterior - Best Italian Restaurants in Melbourne

Kissed by sun-bright tones and with service to match, this eatery channels all the right aspects of Italian coastal dining.

And who doesn’t love a Fried Zucchini Flower (3 for $23). Especially when it comes with Ricotta, Chilli and Honey. From the Pasta selection, we love the cheeky naming of Last Night’s Lasagna ($36) and vibrant hues of the Saffron Squash Gnocchi ($28) with Stracciatella, Pine Nuts and Basil. A dip into the Secondi has us asking whymore Melbourne restaurants don’t serve Swordfish? At Tippy-Tay, it’s lively with a Green Olive Caponata and Fennel ($37).

So to the Drinks Menu. Unusually, I’m going to rave about a Wine, rather than my customary Cocktail or Gin & Tonic. You see, back in a past life, Eatability lived in Puglia, Southern Italy. And my regular poison was the local red – Primitivo. So you can just imagine how happy I was to see A-Mano Primitivo 2021 ($82) on the Tippy-Tay menu.

Yep. For a splash of Italian sunshine, Tippy-Tay is one of the top Italian restaurants in Melbourne.

Il Mercato Centrale Melbourne

Location: 546 Collins St, Melbourne, VIC 3000 Ph: 1300 546 566

Il Mercato Centrale has been a long time coming. So now that ‘s finally here, we felt we really had to pop it on our guide to the finest Italian restaurants in Melbourne.

Not one restaurant, but an entire dining and food shopping experience, the Melbourne is the first branch outside of Italy – joining Rome, Florence, Milan and Turin. And it’s really quite something.

Over an enormous space there are foodstalls selling everything from fresh Seafood to the silkiest Handmade Pasta. In addition to this, there are numerous in-house eating options.

At La Pizzeria, you can sample authentic Napoletana Pizza and Montanara. The Latter is a popular street food from Naples – a fried Pizza Dough with various toppings. Needless to say, we’ve already fallen for the Montanara MORTDELLA ($18) with its crown of Mortadella, Stracciatella Cheese and scattering of Pistachios.

If you feel like pushing the boat out, try Il Ristorante, where Chef Jerry Kim is whipping up tasty delights. The Arancini ($26.5) with Cauliflower, Scamorza, Grana Padano & Gorgonzola Emulsion are as addictive as they sound. Meanwhile, the delicate Cappellacci Neri Di Mare ($46.5) – dramatically dark Squid Ink Pasta stuffed with sweet Spanner Crab & Prawn Mousse, with King Prawn Cutlets, Garlic & Chilli is a genuine show-stopper.

And then there’s an artisan Gelato shop, a Smash Burger joint, an Enoteca and so much more. Honestly, it takes all day to wander around Mercato Centrale. But what a heavenly way to pass you time!

Overall

In conclusion, Melbourne boasts a wide range of Italian restaurants, ranging from canteen-style eateries to fine dining alternatives and as such, you are guaranteed to find the right restaurant to satisfy your Italian cravings.

Whether you are looking for hearty, traditionally American-Italian options like pizza or you are seeking flavoursome seafood and meat dishes, you will definitely find the option to suit your personal preferences from the list above.

Melbourne has garnered a reputation for serving the very best food from around the world and there is no cuisine that is more intrinsically laden with culinary excellence than Italian cuisine.

Therefore, it is important that this city gets it right when it comes to Italian food and I guarantee you will be served food that has been prepared with years of skill and culinary expertise.

Incidentally, we have a dedicated review of Lello Pasta Bar which you can read here.
